Abstract
1443611 Underground storage SOC FRANCAISE DE STOCKAGE GEOLOGIQUE GEOSTOCK 10 July 1974 [10 July 1973] 30509/74 Heading E1F A heavy flowable substance which is solidified at normal storage temperatures, e.g. heavy fuel oil, is stored in a series of parallel underground galleries 2a, 2b .. 4a, 4b which open into a common central channel 5 and which have beds lying in the same horizontal plane, the substance being allowed to solidify; and is removed from storage by circulating a hot fluid over the surface of the substance so that the substance is progressively liquified and flows with the hot fluid towards the central channel 5 where it can be pumped out of storage. As described the substance is heated before being introduced into the galleries 2a.. 4b through the normally closed ends of the galleries via working gallery 6. The substance is then allowed to solidify. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement for removing solidified fuel oil from a gallery 14 having a basin 15 for collecting water. Line a-a represents the top 'surface of the solidified fuel oil and line b-b represents the oil-water interface. Steam is supplied along line 13 to heat exchangers 23 and 36. Heat exchanger 36 heats oil in a closed circuit including lines 38, 40, 42, pump 41. tank 37 and heat exchanger 39. The heat exchanger 39 liquifies the fuel oil in the region of pump 26 at the beginning of the removal operation to allow the pump 26 to remove oil along lines 27 and 11. Pump 16 then pumps water from the basin 15 along line 17, through heat exchanger 23 and along lines 24, 25 to the end 25a of the gallery 14. The hot water flows over the surface a-a of the solidified fuel oil to progressively liquify it and entrain it towards the pump 26 which pumps it out of storage. The hot water is removed from the liquified fuel oil by separator 2. In a modification the hot water is replaced by hot fuel oil which flows along lines 31, 33 and 25 to the end of the gallery 14.
