Abstract

1443393 Exhaust gas purification catalysts KALI-CHEMIE AG 20 Feb 1974 7792/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division C1] Spherical pellets of active alumina having high mechanical strength suitable as supports for catalysts are made by granulating a mixture of hydrated alumina and carbon black with the addition of a solution of ammonia, drying the granules, heat-treating the granules at 250 to 500‹C and finally calcining at a temperature of 1000 to 1200‹C. The hydrated alumina is [preferably a pseudo-boehmite and it may optionally be dehydrated and ground before granulation,. The mixture preferably contains 0.01 to 1%, especially 0.05 to 0.5%, carbon black. The ammonia solution preferably has a concentration of 0.1 to 2% and is suitably introduced in an amount of 30 to 60% by weight based on the weight of the mixture. In a preferred embodiment the alumina/carbon black mixture is mixed with 25 to 45% of the ammonia solution to form a mass which is then granulated with the addition of the remainder of the ammonia solution. In Example 3, pellets are soaked with a Mn salt solution, dried, calcined at 1000‹C for 1 hour, soaked with a Pd salt solution, dried and calcined at 800‹C for 1 hour. The catalyst contained 2% Mn 2 O 3 and 0.2% Pd.
