Abstract

1443343 Flame drilling TSENTRAL GEOFIZICHE TREST 15 Nov 1973 [7 June 1973] 53136/73 Heading E1F For the boring of a hole in the ground by a gas jet discharged from a nozzle of a non-anchored rocket, the rocket is so designed that firstly a balance can be achieved, at a given stand off distance between the nozzle and the face of hole, between the reaction force of the jet and the counter pressure arising from the face and the oppositely directed forces urging the rocket towards the face so that variation from this stand off distance as the face is burnt away causes appropriate movement of the rocket with respect to the face to maintain the stand off distance and secondly the velocity of the waste gases of the jet will exceed the velocity at which maximum sized particles of rock broken off from the face will become weightless when entrained in the gases. Preferably the stand off distance is greater than four times the diameter of the nozzle and there is created between the rocket and the wall of the hole a radial gap of about half the diameter of the rocket. Appropriately directed auxiliary gas jets can be used to create the required balance of the rocket when the reaction force and counter pressure cannot be balanced by the oppositely directed forces for a desired stand off distance.
