Abstract

1442902 Composition for detecting defects in textiles DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP 3 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 19568/74 Heading C4A [Also in Division D1] A composition comprises a fugitive tint and a single phase mixture of at least two liquids of differing polarity, the mixture being such that on evaporation a two phase mixture of liquids is formed in which the phases are of differing polarity. The fugitive tint is any dyestuff, colourant, pigment or ultra-violet absorber that may be applied to textiles and subsequently removed therefrom by washing or scouring without retaining colour or adversely affecting dyeability. The composition is used in a method for facilitating the detection of defects in textile substrates by applying the composition to the substrate and evaporating the liquid mixture to give a two phase mixture of liquids. If a defect is present one of the liquid phases may preferentially migrate to the defect. The fugitive tint, which is present in whichever of the liquid phases it has the greater affinity for or solubility in, will become affixed or diffused to the portion of the substrate where the liquid phase bearing it is, enabling visual inspection of the defects. Suitable fugitive tints are polyoxyethylene fugitive tints and suitable liquids are perchloroethylene, methanol, dioxane, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, methylene chloride, formamide, water, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, stoddard solvent, isopropanol, acetone and benzene.
