Abstract

1442731 Cracking hydrocarbons EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 13 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 11158/74 Heading C5E Hydrocarbons are cracked to give olefins by contacting the feedstock with a regenerable molten medium comprising an alkali metal carbonate containing glass-forming oxides of B, V, Si, P or mixtures thereof at a temperature up to 2500‹ F. The carbonaceous materials formed during the cracking are dispersed in the molten medium which is regenerated by contact with oxygen, steam and/or CO 2 at temperatures up to 3000‹ F. The added oxide may form 0À1-25 wt per cent of the total molten medium. A preferred medium comprises a major amount of Na 2 CO 3 and a minor amount of Li 2 CO 3 and contains B 2 O 3 . When the feedstock contains sulphur the amount of sulphur present in the molten medium may be reduced by contacting the sulphur compounds in the medium with a reducing agent, e.g. carbon and then contacting the reduced sulphur compounds with CO 2 and steam or water to form H 2 S as a recoverable product.
