Abstract

1442627 Target-seeking missiles MESSERSCHMITT - BOLKOW - BLOHM GmbH 28 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 40433/73 Heading F3A [Also in Divisions H3-H5 and G3] If a self propelled, active on passive guided missile has a fixed acquisition field of view 3 or 6, Fig. 1 (e.g. antenna lobes) targets on paths 4 or 5 will be respectively missed. To overcome this, the angle α of the field of view is increased as the missile nears the target, according to the equation: (C#=αmin.Rmax. R MT =missile to target distance. ¢###2). Fig. 2 shows plots of the equation for α=À5, 1, 1À5 and 2 together with five possible evasive paths of the target, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. It is seen for example that the angle variation according to α=C#.R MT -<SP>.5</SP>, will only acquire a target on path 11 and then only at large values of R MT , whereas with the angle variation of α=C#.R MT <SP>-2</SP> only the path 15 is totally non-acquired. The angle variation may be according to a stepped approximation 16 to the equation. Once the target has been acquired, the angle α can be reduced to increase tracking accuracy. To maintain the stability of the guidance loop however, the angle α, after acquisition can continue according to the equation.
