Abstract

1442557 Refrigerant compressors LENNOX INDUSTRIES Inc 19 Dec 1974 [27 Dec 1973] 54931/74 Heading FIN In a reciprocating refrigerant compressor comprising a compression mechanism 22 coupled to a motor 32 and mounted in a casing 11, a temperature sensor 50 responsive to the temperature of the compression mechanism prevents the motor from starting up when the temperature of the mechanism is below a predetermined value. Thus damage to the compressor is avoided due to operation with the lubricating oil in a highly viscous condition. The sensor 50 includes contacts (58) connected in series with the contacts of switches each arranged to prevent motor operation under adverse conditions. The switches include a highpressure switch which opens when the delivery pressure rises above a predetermined value; a lowpressure switch 90 which opens when the suction pressure falls below a predetermined value; a discharge temperature switch 100 which opens when the discharge temperature exceeds a predetermined value; and a motor protection switch 76 which opens when a detector 78 mounted in the motor windings 36 senses an excessive motor temperature. Each of the switches is connected to terminals leading into a control box 62 mounted on the top of the casing 11 whereby the connections between the switches are made within the box, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
