Abstract

1441576 Mircobiological testing DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 Sept 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40558/72 Heading C6F [Also in Divisions B1 and G1] An air sampling apparatus 10, particularly for collecting airborne particles such as mirco- organisms, comprises a vessel divided internally into at least two compartments 11, 12, 13, arranged, and inter-connected through interconnection passages, in a serial order so that sampled air can pass through the compartments and inter-connection passages in series, entering through an inlet to the first compartment from the outside air and leaving through an outlet from the last compartment, each compartment containing a sampling layer 15 having an adhesive surface e.g. agar, in at least the second and any further compartments the sampled air being arranged to flow from the respective inter-connection passage towards each respective sampling layer through an array of mutually similar holes 19 through a plate spaced a small distance, not greater than three times the minmum hole diameter of the said array, from the sampling layer, the cross-section of each of said holes tapering down towards the sampling layer, the holes being arranged to be smaller in each compartment than in the next compartment nearer the inlet, whereby any particles in the sampled air will tend to be deposited on the sampling layers, larger particles being deposited on layers nearer the inlet and smaller particles on layers further from the inlet. Preferably the holes in the or each plate are arranged in radially aligned groups and radial open passages are arranged in the side of the plate facing the sampling layer and between the groups of holes so as to facilitate flow of sampled air.
