Abstract

1441043 Black iron oxide LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 7881/74 Heading C1A A process for the production of a black iron oxide pigment having a blue undertone comprises two or more stages, each comprising firstly treating an aqueous solution of FeSO 4 with a neutralizing agent to form a precipitate and secondly oxidizing the precipitate in suspension with an oxygen-containing gas to black iron oxide, wherein the precipitate in the second and in any succeeding stage is formed and oxidized in the presence of the oxidized precipitate(s) from the proceeding stage(s), the oxidation being conducted at above 50‹ C. if the pH of the suspension being oxidized is 2-5. The sulphate starting material is suitably copperas, preferably derived from the sulphate process for the production of TiO 2 . The starting solution may contain 10-60 g./l. Fe<SP>+2</SP>. The neutralizing agent used in each stage is preferably NH 3 of aqueous NH 4 OH but alkali metal hydroxides may also be used. The agent is preferably used in amounts of 100-120% of that stoichiometrically required. Additional FeSO 4 in the form of a solid or a concentrated solution may be added to the water phase containing the black iron oxide as formed by oxidation in the preceding stage. If desired, only a portion of the Fe content of the initial solution is precipitated in the first stage and the remainder may then be precipitated in one of the subsequent stages. Neutralization is preferably performed at 50-90‹ C. and the oxidation stage is suitably performed at 50- 95‹ C. by passing the gas, e.g. air upwardly through the aqueous suspension for 1-4 hours. Preferably the process consists of 3-7 stages. The combined oxidized precipitates may be recovered by filtration and are then washed with water until free of SO 4 <SP>2-</SP> ions and are then dried at 50-120‹ C. or spray dried and then milled to produce a pigment.
