Abstract

1441044 Black iron oxide pigment LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 7882/74 Heading C1A A process for the production of black iron oxide pigment having a blue undertone comprises two or more stages, each comprising firstly treating an aqueous solution of FeSO 4 with a neutralizing agent to precipitate, in the first and any interemediate stage, a part only of the Fe values therein and then oxidizing the, precipitate formed in the first and any intermediate stage to a Fe<SP>+2</SP> : Fe<SP>+3</SP> ratio above 1 : 2 by treating a suspension thereof with an oxidizing gas, wherein the precipitate in the second and any succeeding stage is formed and oxidized in the presence of the oxidized precipitate(s from the preceding stage(s), the oxidation at each stage being conducted at a temperature at least 50‹ C. if the pH is in the range 2-5, and oxidizing the final combined precipitates to black iron oxide. The starting material is preferably a solution of copperas, e.g. from the sulphate preparation of TiO 2 . The initial solution preferably has a Fe<SP>+2</SP> concentration of 10-60 g./l. The quantity of neutralizing agent used in the first stage is preferably sufficient to react with 30-95% of FeSO 4 and is preferably used in excess, e.g. of up to 20% in the final stage. Ammonia is the preferred neutralizing agent, preferably in the form of aqueous NH 4 OH. The precipitation is suitably conducted in each stage with stirring at 50-90‹ C. Each stage, other than the last, employs sufficient neutralizing agent to react with 70-95% of the sulphate. The oxidation is suitably accomplished by bubbling the gas, e.g. air upwardly through the aqueous medium containing the precipitate for 1-4 hours at 50-95‹ C. The precipitate formed in the first and any intermediate stage are preferably oxidized to a Fe<SP>+2</SP> : Fe<SP>+3</SP> ratio of 1-2 : 1, particularly 1À3-1À7 : 1. The combined oxidized precipitates may be allowed to settle or be recovered by filtration and are preferably washed until free of SO 4 . The product may be dried at 50-120‹ C. or spray-dried, the dry product is suitably milled to produce a pigment.
