Abstract

1440922 Closing containers METAL BOX Ltd 5 Sept 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 41669/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] A method of closing a container 5, comprises heat-sealing a portion of an indexable web 74 of closure material to the rim around the open end of a container, clamping the web between two apertured plates while a knife severs excess closure material around the entire periphery of said rim when the rim and closure material are at least partially heat-sealed to one another, and forming down around the container a portion of the severed closure material which extends around and beyond the rim of the container. The web is also damped during the heat-sealing operation. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a pot 5 is placed in a locating block 10 for reciprocable movement towards and away from a clamping, heat-sealing and severing assembly mounted on a fixed plate 20. In the operation of this embodiment, when striker plates 12 which are movable with the locating block 10, engage the lower one of the pair of clamping plates 34, 38, the lower plate 38 is pushed upwards and the web 74 clamped. Continued upward movement of the locating block 10 and striker plates 12 causes the clamping plates 34, 38 to move upwardly against springs 71 and the web 74, now in contact with the pot rim, moves into engagement with a heated sealing tool 58. Further upward movement of the pot 5 causes the sealing tool 58 which is spring urged downwardly, to yield and a knife 46 which is fixed on the fixed plate 20, severs the covering material. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), the clamping, sealing and severing assembly is movable towards and away from a fixed pot locating block (10). In the operation of this embodiment, when the web (74) contacts the pot (5), the lower one of the clamping plates (118, 164) engages a fixed stop and is pushed against the upper plate (118) to clamp the web (74). Continued downward movement brings the heated sealing tool (134) into contact with the web (74) around the rim of the pot and the cutting blade (158) severs the web. In this latter embodiment, the heat-sealing tool (134) may be mounted through mating curved members (132, 152) or a high rate compression spring to allow the tool limited rocking or floating movement, respectively. In both embodiments the cutting blade is mounted around a former, e.g. 42 Fig. 1, which folds down the overlapping severed closure material around the rim of the pot. The closure material maybe inherently heat-sealable or carry a heatsealable coating, or a heat-sealable adhesive may be applied to the container and/or closure material.
