Abstract

730,836. Sealing containers. KUNIK, W. June 4, 1953 [July 28, 1952], No. 15424/53. Classes 94 (1), 125 (2) and 125 (3). A thermo-plastic cover 4 with a beaded skirt 5 and packing ring 71 is sealed to a thermoplastic container 1 with a circumferential bead 3 by welding the beads together at spaced points 8, so that excess pressure arising within the container while it is being heated is vented through the spaces between the welds. The lid is first pressed down upon the container to compress the packing ring 7<SP>1</SP> upon the rim 2 and bring the bead 6 on the cover close to the bead 3 on the container. The beads are then heated at spaced points to soften them and fuse them together. The beads 3, 6 remain a small distance apart to facilitate the introduction of a knife to open the container. Fig. 5 shows the lidding machine comprising a rotary disc 31 with holes for the lidded containers to be sealed, which are positioned on a platform 12 raised by a hand lever 25, through cam 26 and bell crank lever 16, to press the lid against a plate 14 fixed at the lower end of a vertical bar 13 to clamp the lid in place. The lever 25 also lowers a heating ring 20 adapted to surround the lid and having spaced inward projections engaging the outer wall of the skirt 5 and the beads 6, 3 so that welding occurs at these points. As the lever 25 is released it is held in an intermediate position, with the heating ring removed from the container, by spring detents on the bar 13, delaying its return so that the container is not unclamped until the softened material has reset. The cam 26 may be adjustable to vary the pressure on the lid and the lever 25 and disc 31 may be power driven.
