Abstract

1440223 Laminated carpet backing fabric EASTMAN KODAK CO 5 July 1973 [5 July 1972] 32053/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A foundation fabric adapted for use as backing material for tufted carpets comprises jute or woven or spun-bonded polypropylene fibres and has attached to one of its surfaces a flame barrier comprising self-extinguishing flame-resistant non-woven fibrous material weighing 1-10 ounces per sq. yd. The flameresistant fibres are of PVC, modacrylic polymer (such as a copolymer of vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and, optionally, N-isopropylacrylamide), or blends thereof. The flame barrier may also comprise 0À5% by weight or more of antimony oxide and is attached to the foundation fabric by needle punching or by bonding and curing in a compressed state. In the Examples polyethyene terephthalate, nylon and acrylic fibre pile carpets or shags are tufted using the above foundation fabric, the flame barrier forming an interlayer between the face yarn and fabric, and are then latexed with carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber which may contain Al 2 O 3 .3H 2 O or CaCO 3 .
