Abstract

1440207 Method of and apparatus for combustible fluid analysis ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Sept 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 43278/73 Heading G1B The total elemental sulphur and/or the combustible compounds thereof in a fluid e.g. natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas is monitored by supplying oxygen and the fluid to the inlets of a combustion chamber at respective predetermined rates, the chamber having an outlet conduit sealed thereto and being everywhere sealed to prevent any air from entering thereinto, igniting the fluid in the chamber to form products of combustion, and analyzing the combustion products. The analysis is preferably performed by bubbling the combustion products through the electrolyte in the cell of a coulometric titrator, and indicating the amount of SO 2 titrated thereby. Apparatus when used for monitoring the sulphur content of a sample fluid includes a housing having a wall defining a combustion chamber 10 therein, the chamber having inlet means and an outlet 21 and being sealed except for the inlet means and outlet, first means 11, 12, 13 to supply oxygen under pressure at a first predetermined rate to the chamber through the inlet means, second means 14, 15, 16 to supply the sample fluid under pressure at a second predetermined rate to the chamber through the inlet means, third means 17 sealed through the wall to ignite the fluid in the chamber, and fourth means 25 to analyze the products of combustion of the fluid connected from the chamber outlet. The fourth means preferably includes a coulometric titrator 25 having an electrolyte-containing cell 26 connected from the chamber in a manner to cause the combustion products to be bubbled through the electrolyte. A water trap 22 may be connected between the chamber outlet and the cell, the trap including a hollow body 30 having an inlet 31, an outlet 29 and a vent 23 below the body inlet and outlet, the body inlet being connected from the chamber outlet, the body outlet being connected to the cell, and means 32 to pump the combustion products through the body outlet at a rate less than that at which the combustion products enter the body through the body inlet.
