Abstract

Appts. for detecting and measuring the concn. of NO or NO2, esp. in waste combustion gases, has an inlet, an electrochemical cell, a pump for supplying gas contg. NO or NO2 from the inlet to the electrochemical cell at a controlled flow rate, and a device for indicating the amt. of NO and NO2. The electrochemical cell has a working electrode, that has a catalytic zone for the electrochemical reaction with the gas to be detected, a counter electrode, a reference electrode, and an electrolyte that contacts all three electrodes. The working electrode is placed in a reaction chamber in which it is contacted with the gas, and a stabiliser is provided for maintaining the working electrode at a constant voltage relative to the reference electrode. This voltage is 0.9-1.1 V, relative to a reversible hydrogen electrode in the electrolyte, when the gas to be detected is NO, and is 0.7-1.1 V, relative to the reversible hydrogen electrode, when the gas to be detected is NO2. The catalyst of the working electrode can either effect the electro-oxidn. of NO, or the electro-reduction of NO2, and is deposited on a hydrophobic material to form a diffusion electrode. Cheap, compact, easily operated appts., accurately detects and assesses the quantity of NO or NO2, even when this is present in low concentrations in the presence of high concentrations of CO.
