Abstract
1439997 Safety razors GILLETTE CO 5 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972 (2) 4 June 1973 (2)] 41837/73 Heading B4B A plural edge blade unit for use in shaving comprises leading and trailing blade members 18, 20 each having pairs of flat faces 22, 24 and 42, 44 and a cutting edge 26, 46, the blade member being connected permanently at their mating faces 22, 42 such that the edges are located relatively to each other according to certain blade geometry specified in the description. The blade members are made identical and secured together by spot welding, apertures 34 being formed in the blade member for the removal of shaving debris. The blade unit is fitted into a razor holder comprising a frame member 410, e.g. Fig. 12 of brass plate, having a handle portion 420 and a head portion 412 which includes a cap 414, 416. A blade platform member 440, e.g. of brass plate, is secured to a guard member, e.g. of plastics material, by means of lugs 444 being bent over to engage in corresponding recesses 468 formed in the guard member. The upper surface of the platform includes a pair of projections 454 against which the ends of the cutting edge of the blade member 18 are urged by a spring 484. The spring is adapted, when a grip member 500 is assembled on to the frame member, to press against a ramp 460 formed on the platform thereby causing the unsharpened rear edge of the blade member 20 to be pressed against a locating face 532, Fig. 23; this action causes the cutting edge of the blade member 18 to be urged against the projection as referred to above in order to maintain the correct blade geometry in relation to the skin-contacting surface of the guard as shown in Fig. 5. The blade units are mounted in a blade dispenser (Division B8) having a body portion 210, Figs. 8 and 9, including side walls 224, 226, bottom wall 222, and a forward wall 220; the interior of the dispenser is divided into two compartments 242, 244, Fig. 8, by means of flanges 238, 240 a stack of blade units 212, being located in the compartment 242 and urged by a spring 218 such that the uppermost blade abuts a further pair of flanges 228, 230 defining a slot 232. The rear end of the body portion is closed, during assembly, by a plug 214 after the stack of blades, spring and a blade pusher 216 are first inserted into the upper compartment 241, The pusher is provided with a web 210 which is engageable with the end of the top blade in the stack so that the latter blade can be ejected from the dispenser via an aperture 256. The front wall 220 is provided with a key 260 which is a dapted to be inserted into the head of the razor in order to release the clamping pressure on the used blade and to align the dispenser correctly such that the new blade can be pushed into the razor head. An aperture 254 is provided in the bottom wall 210 such that used blades can be inserted into the compartment 244. A further aperture 252 is formed in the wall 224 so that the number of blades remaining in the dispenser can be seen.
