Abstract

1439948 Flame-resistant polypropylene compositions BASF AG 5 Nov 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51212/73 Addition to 1270318 Heading C3P Flame resistant moulding compositions comprise (a) 100 parts by weight of polypropylene or a copolymer of at least 50 weight per cent of propylene; (b) 0À5 to 9 parts by weight of an aliphatic bromohydrocarbon containing at least 45 weight per cent of bromine; (c) 0À2 to 7 parts by weight of antimony trioxide; (d) 0À05 to 3 parts by weight of an organic phosphite; (e) 0À2 to 6 parts by weight of a mixture of (e 1 ) 20 to 80 weight per cent of an alkane polyol having 4 to 12 carbon atoms and 4 to 12 hydroxyl groups in the form of a solid aggregate at temperatures up to 100‹ C. and (e 2 ) 80 to 20 weight per cent of a substance of formula where R is C 1-4 alkyl, m and o are 0 or 1 to 5, n is 0 or 1 to 4 and p is 0 to 200; and (f) 0À1 to 3 parts by weight of barium and/or cadmium salts of C 10-20 alkanoic or alkenoic acids. Preferred acids are C 10-14 alkanoic acids and preferred components (f) are mixtures of 20 to 80% barium laurate with 80 to 20% cadmium laurate. Examples describe compositions comprising polypropylene, 1,2,5,6,9,10 - hexabromocyclododecane, antimony trioxide, tris(nonylphenyl)- phosphite, pentaerythritol, dicumyl and barium/ cadmium laurates. The compositions may be made into fibres, sheets, pipes, fittings and building panels.
