Abstract

1439864 Drying copy medium in a copying machine CANON KK 11 June 1973 [16 June 1972 (3)] 27630/73 Heading F4G A liquid development type copying machine is provided with a heating-drying station, e.g. a fixing drying chamber 2, for heating and drying copy sheets 1. Suction means extracts vapour laden air from the station from whence the air passes through a cooling-liquefying means, e.g. a heat exchanger 9, for cooling and condensing the vapour, the condensed vapour being then collected. A heat source 3 including an electric heater 4 may be provided in the chamber 2. The pressure in the chamber 2 is maintained at sub-atmospheric by two pumps P 1 , P 2 , the pump P 1 circulating the gas from the chamber through a mixer 8 and back to the chamber whence it impinges upon the copy sheet to be dried and the pump P 2 draws vapour heavy gas through the chamber, through the heat exchanger 9 and pumps the vapour relieved gas back through the heat exchanger 9 to cool gas coming from the chamber, and into the mixer 8. The sheets 1 may be moved by a blotting roller and driving rubber roller combination (Fig. 2(a), not shown) a plurality of rollers covered with ciliary fibres mounted above the heat source (Fig. 2b, not shown) or three pairs of a heating roller and driving roller combinations (Fig. 2c, not shown). The two outlets G and H from the chamber 2 may be replaced by a single outlet (Fig. 2c, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the chamber is provided with a single inlet and one outlet, a pump in the outlet passing vapour laden air to a first cooling-liquefying means and from thence the air stream is split, one portion thereof passing to a second cooling-liquefying means and then to atmosphere through a chamber containing an absorbent material, e.g. active carbon, and the other portion passing back to the chamber. Vapour laden air drawn through outlets G, H of the chamber may be passed to the hermetically sealed copy receiving tray of the copying machine before it is recirculated to the chamber (Fig. 5, not shown).
