Abstract
1439607 Textile treating compositions ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 7 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37634/72 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Cellulosic textile fibres are flameproofed by impregnation with an aqueous solution containing a precondensate of urea and a tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salt together with any excess of the phosphonium salt necessary to make up a ratio of urea to phosphonium salt lying between 0À05 : 1 and 0À25 : 1 mole, the solution being neutralized by the addition of an alkali or base to a pH in the range 5 to 8, preferably 5À8 to 7, and treating the impregnated material with ammonia to form a cross-linked polymer. The phosphonium salt is preferably the chloride (THPC), but may alternatively be the bromide, acetate, phosphate or sulphate. The concentration of the precondensate solution may be from 20 to 40%, preferably 25 to 30% by weight. It may be prepared by refluxing the requisite quantities of urea and phosphonium salt in water, or by refluxing the urea and phosphonium salt at a molar ratio of 0À5 : 1 and adding the necessary excess of phosphonium salt to the solution subsequently. The neutralizing agent may be caustic soda or sodium carbonate. The ammonia may be applied in two stages, first as gaseous ammonia and second as aqueous ammonia, or alternatively by the rapid gas cure method of Specification 1,439,608. The process may be applied to the treatment of lightweight cotton fabrics, e.g. nightwear.
