Abstract
1439299 Purifying n-paraffins by hydrogenation TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 Nov 1974 [26 Dec 1973 (2)] 50886/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] Oxygen-containing impurities are removed from n-paraffins, e.g. C 6 -C 30 by catalytic hydrogenation at 600-750‹ F. in the presence of a catalyst comprising alumina and a group VIII metal, and 10-5000 p.p.m. of nitrogen, present as ammonia or an organonitrogen compound. The impure n-paraffins may be produced as byproducts in the production of amines by nitration of paraffins and subsequent hydrogenation of the nitroparaffins produced or in the production of secondary alcohols via borate esters. The impure n-paraffins may be passed through a bed of alumina, silica gel or activated carbon before hydrogenation. Further hydrogenation may be carried out at 450-650‹ F. to remove olefin impurities. The catalyst may comprise Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ni or Co, and optionally Re, molybdenum oxide or tungsten oxide.
