A procedure to convert a mixture of n-paraffins and n-paraffin by-products into practically pure n-paraffins, the procedure of which is to catalytically hydrogenate said mixture, at a temperature of about 600 to 750ºF (316 to 399ºC), in the presence of a catalyst comprising alumina and a Group VIII metal, characterized in that the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of around 10 to 5000 parts per million of nitrogen, present in the form of ammonia or an organic nitrogenous compound, calculated on said paraffinic mixture .
