Abstract

1439230 Making i.c. engine valves; welding by fusion MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURGNURNBERG AG 16 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972 17 May 1973] 38864/73 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division F2] A method of making a valve for an internal combustion engine, the valve having an evacuated inner cavity extending along its stem 101 and partially filled with a heat-conducting substance 111, which when the valve is in use is liquid, wherein two valve parts are provided of which a first part has an open-ended cavity, the heat-conducting substance is introduced in liquid form into the cavity of the first part, the valve parts are cooled to solidify the substance 111, the parts are assembled either before or after the cavity is evacuated and the parts are welded together in a vacuum chamber. The valve stem 101 is welded to the valve disc 107, preferably by electron beam welding, and during welding the stem is cooled to prevent melting of the heat-conducting substance. Cooling is effected by placing copper blocks on the stem and cooling coils may be used in addition. The inner cavity is partially filled with liquid sodium drawn off from below the surface of a supply in a reservoir, so that as far as possible contact with air is prevented. When the sodium has solidified, a closure member 110 is located on the valve stem, and when the parts are placed in the vacuum chamber, air is evacuated from the upper part of the bore 102 through recesses (not shown) formed in the member 110. The valve stem is formed with a central bore 103 communicating at one end with a collecting chamber 108, from which radiate recesses 109, and at the other end with the bore 102 via a constricted zone 105. Coolant flows from the bore 102 to the chamber 108 through a plurality of bores 104.
