Abstract

1439207 Fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 Oct 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 46708/73 Heading G6C A fuel element having a fuel-retaining spring 18 in an end plenum 17 of the cladding tube 12 is provided with a barrier member of a material different from that of the spring between the end of the latter and the end plug 13. This material preferably either has a higher melting temperature than that of the end plug and cladding tube or does not form a eutectic therewith. Alternatively, the material may be such that, if it becomes melted and mixed in the end plug to cladding tube weld, it does not contaminate or cause a deleterious effect therein. Materials such as a nickel-chromium alloy, zirconium, titanium and tungsten are suitable with zirconium being the preferred material when the end plug and cladding tube are also formed of zirconium. An embodiment of a barrier member 19(1) is shown in Fig. 2 in the form of a helical coil mated with and thereby secured to the close wound end turns 21 of the fuel-retaining spring 18. The helical coil may be close wound throughout its length or, as shown, may comprise a mating portion 22 which is close wound and an extending portion 23 formed with spaced turns. A further embodiment of a barrier member is shown in Fig. 5 as a cylindrically-shaped barrier member 19(2). The member 19(2) comprises a length of thin-walled tubing formed with a lower portion 41 inserted into the end turns 21 of the fuelretaining spring 18, a bulged portion 42 for seating on the spring 18 to limit the depth of insertion, and an upper portion 43 contacting the end plug 13. The lower portion 41 may be roll formed with a helical groove to mate with the end turns 21.
