Abstract

1439009 Ethylene polymer compositions UNION CARBIDE CORP 3 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 55888/73 Heading C3P Compositions useful for primary insulation in contact with moisture barrier filler and copper conductor in electric wires and cables comprise (1) a solid ethylene polymer of density 0À928 to 0À955 g./cc., (2) copper deactivating amounts of at least one oxalyldihydrazide, alkyl hydroxyphenyl alkanoyl hydrazine or substituted amido triazole and (3) effective amounts of an antioxidant other than (2) having a molecular weight of at least 550 and selected from sulphurfree compounds containing at least three hindered phenolic hydroxyl groups and compounds containing divalent sulphur and at least two hindered phenolic hydroxyl groups, components (2) and (3) together constituting more than 0À1 per cent by weight of the composition. The ethylene polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer with up to 10 weight per cent of propylene, butene-1, pentene-1 or hexene-1. The compositions may also contain pigments, e.g. carbon black and titanium dioxide, and blowing agents. Examples describe compositions comprising (1) ethylene/butene-1, copolymers, (2) copper deactivators selected from N,N<SP>1</SP>-dibenzyl oxalyl dihydrazide, N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-#- (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)propionyl hydrazine, 3-salicyloylamido-1,2,4-triazole and alkyl derivatives thereof, and (3) antioxidants selected from pentaerythritol tetra-3,5-di-tbutyl-4-hydroxyphenylpropionate, a polymeric hindered phenol, 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris-(3,5- di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl)benzene, 1,3,5 - tris - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) - s i triazine - 2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)trione and the di-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenol propionic acid) ester of dihydroxymethyl thioether.
