Abstract

Briquets for making carbide are made by mixing lime or slaked lime and non-coking coal such as anthracite with enough water to render the mixture sufficiently plastic for pugging. The briquets are dried and hardened by air-drying at ordinary or raised temperature, preferably first at ordinary temperature and then at a gradually increasing temperature which may reach 900 DEG C. at the end, so as to expel all combined water. The heating should be effected under reducing or non-oxidizing conditions and without exposure to much carbonic acid. The production and treatment of the briquets and the production of the carbide may be effected in a continuous process. Specifications 133,354 and 133,355 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the use of other non-coking carbons such as coke, wood-charcoal, &c. and of a binder such as tar, molasses, sulphite pitch &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
