Abstract

1438553 Electro-plating iron-nickel alloy OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 31 May 1973 [3 July 1972 (3)] 03316/76 Divided out of 1438552 Heading C7B Ni-Fe alloy optionally containing Co is electroplated from the following bath at pH 2À5-5À5; (a) Ni<SP>2+</SP> with up to 50 wt. per cent of Co<SP>2+</SP>, (b) Fe<SP>2+</SP> and/or Fe<SP>3+</SP>, (c) an Ni brightener, (d) an Fe complexing agent containing at least two complexing groups one of which is COOH and the other is COOH or OH and (e) a compound R 1 N = C (R 2 ) SR 3 where R 1 is H or the C of an organic group, R 2 is amino, substituted amino or the C of an organic group and R 3 is the C of an organic group. R 1 and R 2 or R 3 may be combined in a single group. Optional components are a surfactant, and a compound XO 3 SRSA in which A is H, -R 1 SO 3 X, -SR 2 SO 3 X or -R 3 ; R, R 1 and R2 are alkylene, arylene or aralkylene; R3 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and H is a cation. Specified compounds (e) include 2-amino-thiazole and derivatives thereof, and S-substituted isothiourea compounds. The complexing agent may be citric or gluconic acid (others listed) or a soluble salt including the Fe salt thereof. Many sulphonate compounds are listed. The Ni, Co and Fe are present as conventional salts and the brightener is also conventional e.g. a sulphioxygen compound optionally with acetylenic, N-heterocyclic quateruary, and betaine compounds. Alternatively Fe may be introduced via a soluble NiFe or Fe anode. The bath exemplified, in addition to Ni and Fe contains Na gluconate, H 3 BO 3 , saccharin, allyl suphonate the adduct (both sulphonated and unsulphonated) of 1À8 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of butyne diol, the adduct of 1.8 moles epichlorhydrin and 1 mole of propargyl alcohol, and thiourea -S- acetic acid. Operating conditions to give a plate containing up to 50% Fe and 120-180‹F at a c.d. of 10-70 ASF with or without agitation. A subsequent microcracked Cr layer may be applied. Specified substrates are steel and ABS, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene and phenol-aldehyde resins bearing Cu or Ni deposits. The bath of Specification 1438554 is disclaimed.
