Abstract

1438530 Castors A VAN DE WALLE 20 Sept 1973 [27 April 1973] 44135/73 Heading A4U [Also in Division F2] A trolley with rear castors 1, 1' and front castors 2, 2' includes a rod and lever system 5-10 to operate locking mechanisms of the castors. Each locking mechanism which is accommodated in a respective sleeve 4 is actuable by the rod and lever system 5-10 via a cam in the sleeve and has three positions, a first in which the wheel of the castor is free, a second in which the wheel can no longer pivot and a third in which the wheel can no longer pivot or rotate. The system 5-10 comprises a rear rod 5 and a front rod 6 both of hexagonal cross-section and connecting with the cams in the sleeves 4. Between the rods 5, 6 are pivotally inter-connected an arm 7, a link 9 and an arm 8 and a pedal or handle 10 is provided on the rear rod 5, which handle or pedal 10 is operable to bring the rods 5, 6 into three different positions as illustrated respectively in Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown). The radial distance between the axis of rod 5 and the pivotal axis of the connection between the link 9 and arm 7, and the radial distance between the axis of rod 6 and the pivotal axis of the connection between link 9 and arm 8 are in the ratio 84:55 (e.g. 84 mm and 55 mm). When the handle 10 is in the horizontal position (Fig. 2), the arm 7 is directed forward at an angle of 25 degrees to the vertical, the arm 8 is directed vertically downwardly and the locking mechanisms of the castors do not act. When the handle 10 is raised by an angle 30 degrees above the horizontal (Fig. 3) the rod 5 moves through 30 degrees which leaves the rear wheels free, but the rod 6 moves through 60 degrees to actuate the locking mechanism of the front wheels which can turn but no longer pivot. When the handle 10 is lowered through 60 degrees below the horizontal (Fig.4) all four wheels are locked and prevented from pivoting or rotating.
