Abstract
1438153 Polybutylene terephthalate compositions BASF AG 11 Oct 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 47472/73 Heading C3R A flame-retardant, self-extinguishing non- drip moulding composition comprises per 100 p.b.w. of polybutylene terephthalate from 0À5- 15 p.b.w. of finely divided red phosphorus and from 2-50 p.b.w. of an inert filler, e.g. glass fibres, chalk and preferably asbestos, the polybutylene terephthalate having a relative viscosity of from 1À3-1À8 determined in 0À5% by weight solution in a 3 : 2 phenol/o-dichlorobenzene mixture at 25‹ C. The average size of the phosphorus particles is generally 0À001-0À5 mm. in diameter. The red phosphorus may be employed either in the pure form or as a mixture with a lactam or a low-melting transesterification product obtained from 1 mole of dimethyl terephthalate and 2 moles of butane-1,4-diol, the resulting mixture containing 25-90% by weight of phosphorus. The polyester may be modified with up to 20 mole per cent of other dicarboxylic acids or alcohols. Uses.-Shaped articles for use in electrical engineering, electronics, precision engineering, automobile industry, chemical engineering equipment and in the furniture industry.
