Abstract

1437921 Selective printers; inking apparatus DYMO INDUSTRIES Inc 11 June 1974 [19 June 1973] 25844/74 Headings B6F and B6C A printing tool comprises a plurality of type elements 36, Fig. 5, displaceable along a path of travel to position a selected one in a printing station 34. The selected type element 36A being deflected from the path as it enters the printing station, inking means 81, Fig. 4, for applying ink to the selected type element 36A, and means 100 for urging a strip 14 against the inked selected type element 36A. After setting the selected type element 36A in position, a trigger 30 is depressed, whereby the inking means 81 is drawn across the selected type element, and the strip carrying means 100 is subsequently lifted to contact the strip 14 therewith. Inking mechanism.-An ink absorbent roller 80, Fig. 4, contacts one of a pair of travelling rollers 83, 84 when they are in their rest position, the absorbent roller 80 being rotated through a gear 88 when the type element is selected by rotating a type disc 52. The degree of contact between the travelling rollers and the absorbent roller is adjustable, a shoulder 176 on the frame 74 carrying the rollers 83, 84 engaging one of three selectively positionable stops 178 (182, 184, Fig. 11, not shown) on a disc 180. On first depressing the trigger 30, Fig. 5, a pin 70 engaging an L-shaped slot in the frame 74 pivots the frame about axis 76 and draws the travelling rollers 83, 84 across the selected type element 36A. During subsequent displacement of the pin 70, the frame 74 is held in its displaced position 74S while printing takes place. Impression action.-On further depression of the trigger 30, a cam surface 96 is brought into contact with a surface 98 whereby the strip carrying means 100 is lifted to press the tape against the inked type element 36A. Strip feed.-On return of the trigger 30, a crank 152 is driven by the returning inking frame 74 to drive a ratchet wheel 150 through a pawl 144 and hence advance the tape 14 through pinch rollers 122, 132. Cutting.-The strip 14 consists of an adhesive coated label material (16, Fig. 3, not shown) and a backing layer (188). A section of label material can be severed without cutting the backing layer, or a section of strip can be completely severed, leaving a tab (221) on the remaining strip to assist peeling off labels subsequently. Cutting blades 192, 194 are mounted on the inking frame 74, the strip 14 being engageable with one or both of the blades by a lever 196. A pin 212 is axially slidable to render the blade 192 operative for complete severence of the strip or inoperative for separating off a part of the label material only. Index setting type selection.-The type elements 36 are supported on resilient fingers 54 of a type disc 52, the disc lying generally in a plane P. A transparent selector wheel 40 is keyed to the type disc 52 and is rotated for type selection until a pointer 42 is aligned with an index character 44 on the subframe 24. A detent arrangement 62 ensures proper alignment. The selected type element 36A is deflected downwardly by a roller 60. Strip magazine and type disc release.- A slide 236 can be pushed into the machine to part legs 232, Fig. 4, of a strip magazine 48, Fig. 5, or pulled out of the machine whereby a camming rib 264, Fig. 4, rotates a locking ring (256, Fig. 6, not shown) to permit removal of the subframe 24 and replacement thereof with an alternative subframe carrying a different font.
