Abstract

1437147 Tetrafluoroethylene-propylene copolymers THIOKOL CORP 18 June 1974 27035/74 Heading C3P A thermoplastic, elastomeric copolymer of tetrafluroethylene and propylene has a substantially uniform composition and a molar ratio of tetrafluoroethylene units to propolyene units of 1À0 : 0À11 to 1À0 : 0À54. It may be prepared by adding to an inert liquid medium a mixture of tetrafluoroethylene and propylene in a molar ratio of 1À0 : 0À01 to 1À0 : 0À087, adding an initiator to the resulting mixture and thereafter continually feeding in a mixture of tetrafluoroethylene and propylene having a molar ratio of tetrafluoroethylene units to propylene units within the range 1À0 : 0À11 to 1À0 : 0À54 and substantially equal to that of the copolymer initially formed at a rate which will maintain the pressure of the monomers within the reactor substantially constant whilst maintaining the reaction mixture at a temperature of 5‹ to 120‹ C. and a pressure of 100 to 1,000 p.s.i.g. Examples are given in which the emulsifier is ammonium perfluoro-n-octanoate and sheets produced from the copolymer are exposed to gamma radiation.
