Abstract

1437090 Combustion gases with reduced soot content SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 29768/72 Heading C5E - Combustion gases having substantially reduced soot content, e.g., less than 0À3% by wt., are produced by partially combusting carbonaceous fuels and passing the soot-containing gases at substantially the temperature and pressure of the partial combustion into a non- catalytic soot-conversion zone in which soot particles are held, e.g. for at least 5 seconds, and converted into carbon monoxide by reaction with steam and/or carbon dioxide present in the gas, and withdrawing gas of reduced soot content from the zone. The soot-conversion zone consists of at least one bed of ceramic material which may consist of (i) layers of packed perforated bricks the perforations of the bricks in a lower layer interconnecting with the perforations of an upper layer to form elongated tubes in the direction of gas flow, the tubes having a diameter of 0À5 to 2À5 cm. and presenting a surface area available for gas contact of 30 to 200 sq. metres per cubic metre of bricks, through which the gas flows at an average gas velocity of 1 to 10 metres per second; or (ii) a fluid bed of ceramic particles, of average diameter 10 to 1000 microns, through which the gas flows at a superficial velocity of 0À1 to 1 meter per second. The temperature in the sootconversion zone may be from 1300‹ to 1500‹ C. and the pressure from 10 to 300 atmospheres. The gases leaving the conversion zone are passed through a heat exchanger. Apparatus for producing the substantially soot-reduced combustion gases comprises a brick lined partial combustion reactor free of internals and solids with one or more inlets for fuel, oxygen-containing gas and steam and an exit for partially combusted gases, and a sootconversion vessel containing at least one bed of ceramic material connected to the partial combustion reactor with an exit for substantially soot-reduced gases which may be connected to a waste heat boiler. The ceramic material may take the form of bricks having perforations forming elongated tubes 0À5 to 5 metres long, the size of individual bricks being between 15 cm. long, 5 cm. wide, 5 cm. deep and 60 cm. long, 20 cm. wide, 20 cm. deep, or fluidizable particles, e.g. of average diameter 10 to 1000 microns.
