Abstract

1436909 Ink-drop printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Sept 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 40375/74 Heading G4H In an ink jet printer, ink drops are caused to merge in flight by charging some drops with data signals of one polarity and other drops with signals of the other polarity. Data signal voltages of one polarity are produced by a D/A converter, and its output and a relatively-small fixed base voltage of the other polarity are selectively gated through respective inputs of a differential amplifier to the drop charging electrode under control of logic actuated by 2-bit grey scale signals, the bit combinations 00, 01, 10, 11 causing charging such that respectively no drop reaches the document, one drop reaches it, two drops merge and reach it, three drops merge and reach it, thus controlling print density.
