Abstract
1436543 Making windings PLESSEY CO Ltd 8 Aug 1973 [13 May 1972] 22573/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] A hollow winding for a rotor of an electric machine, e.g. a motor or generator, is made by laying down the turns of the winding on a jig or mandrel, differentially sliding two members 2, (3) of the jig or mandrel relating to a third member 1 of the jig or mandrel sandwiched between the two members 2, (3) to form a predetermined turn configuration, removing the jig or mandrel, deforming the winding into a hollow cylinder and bonding the turns of the winding. A wire 4 is wound on a jig comprising a wide flat plate 1 sandwiched between two narrower plates 2, (3), after which the plates 2, (3) are moved in opposite directions to produce the desired turn configuration, Fig. 3. To facilitate formation of the turn configuration on the jig, the wire is. anchored in grooves in the plates 2, (3) and/or is secured to the plates 2, (3) by tape or adhesive. After removing the jig, the winding is formed into a hollow cylinder (Fig. 4, not shown) which is pressed into a mould where it is impregnated with epoxy resin which is cured by heating. Loops 5, 6 are formed in the winding to facilitate connection to a commutator and the ends of the winding are electrically connected.
