Abstract
143,636. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 27, 1919. Protective arrangements for electric distributing systems comprises two or more sparkgaps in series, shunts being provided for one or more of the gaps so that the transient voltages across the gaps are divided in proportion to the transient breakdown voltages of the gaps; as a consequence, the gaps break down simultaneously. As shown, the gap 2, which is in series with the gap 1, is shunted by a condenser 11 of definite capacity in relation to the gaps 1, 2. The gap 1 is protected by a hood 7 one side of which forms an arcing-horn working with a corresponding horn 9; these horns take the spark when it has been started across the gaps, and help to blow it out. An electrolytic cell 10 is included in the discharge circuit. A resitance may replace the condenser, or a condenser may be used with a resistance in parallel. The hood may form one of the electrodes for the gap 1. Where three gaps are used in series, the second and third gap are suitably shunted.
