Abstract
1436348 Automatic control of position BRITISH STEEL CORP 14 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 28874/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division G1] In automatic weld tracking apparatus, a weld detector includes two secondary coils, whose outputs are differenced to form a tracking control, and an energized primary coil that surrounds the secondary coils. As shown, a weld tracker 1 is used to position ultrasonic probes 7, 8 relative to a weld 4 on metal tube 5. The tracker includes a primary coil energized from oscillator 26, and two secondary coils (see Fig. 3 not shown). The output of the secondary coils, which are dependent upon the position of the coils relative to the weld, are differenced by a bridge circuit 27 and compared at 29 with the phase shifted oscillator output from gate-pulse shaper 31. Any difference is averaged by amplifier 32 and used to control a pneumatic valve 34 for air motor 36, that moves the tracker 1 so that it follows the weld. Details of the tracker and its support mechanism are given on Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
