Abstract

1435896 Electrolytic cells C T MATTINGLY 22 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972] 39258/72 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell incorporates one junction of a thermocouple formed by its electrodes, a heat source being associated with one of the two junctions to produce a temperature gradient therebetween. As shown, in a cell having a bath 1 filled with electrolyte 2 into which the anode 4 and cathode 5 dip, the electrodes 4, 5 preferably comprise the cold junction of the thermocouple, with their ends respectively bonded to n-type and p-type semi-conductor wafers 6, 7, joined by a solar heat absorbing surface 8 forming a hot junction outside the cell. A cooling jacket 9 may be provided for the cell. A semi-permeable membrane 13 may be situated between the electrodes, with the anode being surrounded by a gas enclosure 14 leading to a collection chamber 15 for evolved gases. The cell may be used for metal deposition (coating or refining) or hydrogen production by electrolysis of water.
