Abstract

1435596 Luminescent screens TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 16 Aug 1973 [21 Aug 1972 23 Aug 1972] 38667/73 Heading H1D A method of making a striped cathodoluminescent screen for a colour c.r.t. comprises irradiating a concave shadow mask having elongate apertures separated by bridge portions using a source of sufficient effective length to produce on a radiation sensitive film a continuous image for each row regardless of bridge portions, and vibrating the source in a direction having at least a component perpendicular toits longitudinal axis to at least partially compensate for diffraction. The guns may be "inline" and the phosphor stripes separated by light absorber and narrowing at screen ends horizontally from the centre. Three types of irregularities are considered: (i) those appearing in all parts of the screen, (ii) those appearing gradually in the corners due to non-parallelism of source and mask at all points and/or (iii) those appearing opposite the mask bridging portions, these being discussed in relation to source dimensions. Some compensations require a source width > 1 mm. which produces diffraction i.e. a type (i) irregularity (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) which is reduced by the source vibration (Fig. 9, not shown). Fig. 10 (not shown) includes high P Hg source (54), slender window (55), pivoted arms (56-58) and cam (60) producing the vibrations. Type (ii) uneveness may be reduced by inclining the source to the mean value of the inclinations (cf. Fig. 11, not shown) for each elementary area (65) (Fig. 12, not shown), e.g. byapparatus (Fig. 13, not shown) with shield (68) with end on elongate slit (67) and moved along the Y-axis by motor (69) and lever (71), light source (35) being synchronously inclined about shaft (74) so that source and area (65) remain parallel. Figs. 10 and 13 apparatus are combined in practice. Type (iii) uneveness may be substantially eliminated by sources with windows as in Figs. 14A-14C (not shown). Absorbing and phosphor stripes may be laid in either sequence and a shadow mask with reduced apertures may be used for screen fabrication. Mask, stripe and source dimensions and vibrating amplitudes and periods are given.
