1435242 Expanding reels WEAN UNITED Inc 7 Aug 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 34784/74 Heading F2U An expandable reel for winding strip comprises an arbor 16, radially movable segments 10, (12), 14, a first series of spaced-apart bores 32 in the arbor for each segment radially aligned with a second series of bores 52 in the segments, wedge assemblies 28, 72, 74, 76 and 30 being provided in the bores with inclined surfaces such that relative axial movement of the arbor causes radial movement of the segments. Two types of wedge assemblies are shown. The end assemblies 28, 30 each consist of an outer element 50 which is retained in a liner 54 in the bore by a bayonet connection and is provided with a projection 66 with side pins which radially interlock with, and slide in, inclined grooves in an inner element 38, the latter being retained in a liner 34 in the bore by a bayonet connection. The central assemblies 72, 74, 76 each consist of inner and outer elements, 38, 50 without radial interlock, the inner element being provided with a recess (86), Fig. 6 (not shown) in its inclined surface to permit the element to pass into cut-outs 70 in the segment during axial movement. If desired, the projection 66 and side pins of the end assemblies may be replaced by a T-projection (90), Fig. 7 (not shown) which slides in a T-slot (88). Three expansible segments may be provided restrained and driven by an end cap 24 which is secured to the arbor 16. Expansion may be effected by axial movement of the arbor or by axial movement of the segments through a central actuating rod.
