Abstract

1434585 Curing poly-(meth)acrylate monomers; acrylic coatings PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 8 June 1973 [9 June 1972] 27364/73 Heading C3P A polyacrylate or polymethacrylate monomer is cured with ionizing radiation in the presence of triphenylphosphine and in an atmosphere containing 300 to 1000 parts per million of oxygen. The poly-(meth)acrylate monomer may be cured in admixture with other monomers or polymers, e.g. alkyl and hydroxyalkyl- (meth)acrylates, and acrylic polymers, other vinyl polymers, polyesters or cellulosic polymers. In examples the poly-(meth)acrylate monomer is a mixture of 3-acrylyloxy-2,2- dimethylpropyl 3 - acrylyloxy - 2,2 - dimethylpropionate and neopentyl glycol diacrylate. The ionizing radiation used is preferably high energy electrons; other useful forms include X-rays, gamma rays, and high energy nuclear particles. Curing may be effected in situ on a substrate to produce an acrylic coating; useful substrates include wooden articles such as panelling and furniture, paper products, hardboard, and cement or cement-asbestos products. The coatings may include pigments (e.g. titanium dioxide and tinting pigment) and plasticizers.
