Abstract

1434475 Aerials M TACUSSEL 3 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 19514/74 Heading H4A A directional aerial comprises two longitudinally spaced dipole elements 2, 4, Fig. 1, each formed by respective pairs of radiators 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and 8, 8<SP>1</SP> in Vee formation. The apical ends of the radiators 6 and 8 are connected together by a member 10, which is continued to a feed terminal A. Similarly, a member 12 connects the apical ends of the radiators 61 and 8<SP>1</SP> to each other and to a feed terminal B. Points 24, 22 near the outer ends of the radiators 6, 8 are connected together by a resistive load 16, and points 24<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>1</SP> near the outer ends of the radiators 61, 81 are connected together by a resistive load 16<SP>1</SP>. The length L of each radiator may be between 0À65# and 1À0# (# = wavelength corresponding to mean operating frequency), the vertex angles of the dipoles may be 90 degrees, the spacing D between the dipoles may be from 0À30L to 0À45L, the distance l of the connecting points for the resistive loads from the open ends of the radiators may be from 0À2L to 0À4L, and the values of the resistive loads may be from 400 to 800 ohms. The aerial has a main radiation lobe in the direction 18, and the resistive load arrangement is stated greatly to reduce back lobing. In a second embodiment an additional Vee-shaped dipole is provided which is located between the dipoles 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and 8, 8<SP>1</SP> shown in Fig. 1, and is disposed close to the former. It is connected to the members 10, 12, and to the points 24, 24<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 5, not shown). In a third embodiment, four Vee-shaped dipoles, which are equally spaced apart, have their apical ends connected to common elements from two feed points, and a resistive load is provided between each adjacent pair of radiators (Fig. 6, not shown). The conductive members of an aerial may be rods or tubes, or the whole aerial may be stamped from a metal plate. In a fourth embodiment, the aerial is formed by a printed circuit process, a matching and connection portion 26, Fig. 7, being also provided.
