Abstract

1434246 Channel induction furnace ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 26 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30225/73 Heading H5H Power factor of a channel induction furnace is increased by replacing the normal helical primary winding which is inductively coupled with the U-shaped heating channel by a pair of pancake coils, e.g. 19-20, on opposite sides of the U-shaped channel, e.g. 14 with their major surfaces parallel to the plane of the U and either providing cooling plates parallel to channel or making the coils 19, 20 hollow for coolant. As shown, depending from hearth 11 is a multichannel inductor 12 having a plurality of parallel channels 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 separated by primary pancake coils 19, 20, 21, 22 which reinforce the inductor lining. An iron core 18 which may have several parallel branches (Fig. 4, not shown) passes through the coils. Each pancake coil preferably comprises two supposed spiral winding separated by electrical insulation. The coil conductors are preferably hollow for coolant. Copper sheets with or without cooling coils may be interposed between the heating channels and induction heating coils for cooling purposes and to protect the heating coils from molten metal should the furnace lining fail. Conventional helical heating windings may be additionally provided.
