Abstract

985,506. Transformers and inductors. TRENCH ELECTRIC Ltd. May 15, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1963], No. 19285/63. Heading HIT. In order to provide a uniform voltage distribution, the coil arrangement for an inductive device consists of a plurality of concentric coils which may have different numbers of turns, connected in parallel, each coil comprising a plurality of elements, arranged axially end-toend and connected in series, each element having a number of turns of insulated conductor. A high-voltage shunt reactor 10 (Fig. 1) supported on an insulating pedestal 13 inside a metal tank 11 has coils 31 ... 34 (Fig. 2) each consisting of elements a, b, c, d &c. Each element has a plurality of turns of copper wire 35. The coils may be spaced from one another by T-shaped insulating members 37 (Fig. 3, not shown) to which are keyed slidable spacers 38 to provide channels for cooling fluid. The coils surround a cylindrical insulating member 50 having end members 51, 52. These consist of pairs of fibreboard discs 56 and 57, 58 and 59, each pair separated by a copper spider, 60, 61, which are provided with terminals 62, 63 to supply the coils in parallel. The discs are metallized to provide shielding and may be segmented. Further shielding from high-voltage gradients is effected by the use of grading rings e.g. 71, 72, and from magnetic influences by magnetic shields 24. The tank bottom may be coated with or made of aluminium or an inner aluminium casing may be provided. Examples detailing various parameters are given. The reactor is preferably coreless.
