Abstract

1433952 Machines for setting buttons TEXTRON INC 3 July 1973 [11 July 1972 3 May 1973] 31742/73 Heading A3H [Also in Divisions B3 B4 and G3] A fluid control apparatus in a machine having a ram 10 and anvil 12 for assembling two component fasteners e.g. buttons, rivets, snap fasteners in a piece of material e.g. a garment, comprises a fluid motor 93 for moving the ram 10, a fluid motor 103 for moving the anvil 12, a valve 55 for controlling the motors 93, 103 and a pressure responsive device 130 for causing separation of the ram 10 and anvil 12 when the pressure in the anvil motor 103 reaches a predetermined value. When a plunger 61 in a valve 48 is depressed, air from a source 32 passes through the valve 48 to a valve 52 from which it passes by a conduit 56 through a valve 57, a conduit 58 and into a valve 60. A rod 88 in the valve 60 is moved to the left to allow a main conduit 68, connected to the source 32 through a reservoir 44, to be connected to an inlet conduit 76 of a cylinder 75 whose piston 74 is thereby moved to the right causing fastener elements to be moved adjacent the ram 10 and anvil 12. An end chamber of a valve 72 is exhausted to atmosphere through a passage 84 and port 86 allowing a rod 90 to be moved to the right by a spring 92 to cause the main conduit 68 to be connected to a passage 87 so that the rod 88 is returned to its initial position. Subsequently the valve 72 and fastener feed motor 73 are returned to their initial positions, due to connection between the main conduit 68 and a passage 84 and a conduit 78. When air is supplied through the inlet conduit 76 of the cylinder 75, pressure is applied through a conduit 79 to lower a rod 78 in the valve 57 against a spring 180 to disconnect the conduits 56, 58 until the motor 73 has returned to its initial position. When the plunger 61 is depressed, air pressure is also supplied into the control valve 55 via a conduit 53 to lift a rod 118 causing the main conduit 68 to be connected via a port 69 to inlet conduits 100, 112 of the motors 93, 103 which are operated to move the ram 10 and anvil 12 towards each other. The piston 104 in the anvil motor 103 is moved down at a slower rate due to an adjustable constriction 114 in the inlet conduit 112. When the lever 26 connected to the anvil 12 is pivoted by the piston rod 108, a plunger 64 in a valve 52 is lowered to connect the conduit 53 to atmosphere. When the pressure in the anvil motor 103 reaches a predetermined value due to the contact pressure of the ram and anvil 10, 12, a diaphragm 158 and an attached valve member 160 of the device 130 are raised against the bias of a spring 168 to cause the rod 118 to be forced down and the motors 93, 103 to be returned to their initial positions. The predetermined pressure may be set by an adjusting screw 164 which adjusts the force of the spring 168.
