Abstract

1433830 Load moving apparatus BRITISH STEEL CORP 10 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 57337/73 Heading B8J [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for moving a load comprises four jacks 1, each arranged on a track 9 on a base 8. Each jack 1 bears on a metal pad 2 on the underside of which is bonded an elastomer layer 3 having a peripheral skirt 4. In operation pressure fluid is fed to the underside of the elastomer layer 3 slightly dishing it, Fig. 2, and reducing the friction so that the jack 1 can readily be moved sideways. Included in the apparatus is a load supporting frame 11 with three dependant legs 12 mounted astride the base 8. An actuator 14 is connected between the base 8 and the frame 11. As shown the apparatus is used to lift an ingot mould 20 from its parked position on concrete blocks 21 and transport it as required. Fig. 5 shows the frame 11 lifted by actuation of the jacks 1, pressurized fluid being supplied to form a film under the pads 2 whereupon operation of the actuator 14 to its extended position slides the jacks 1 along their tracks 9 carrying the frame 11 and load with them. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates that retraction of the jacks 1 allows the frame 11 to rest on its legs 12 whereupon retraction of the actuator 14 drags the base 8 along under the jacks 1 to complete a walking movement. As shown the jacks 1 and the actuator 14 are hydraulically operated from a power pack 17 and the fluid pressure films are of grease supplied from a pump 18, though air, gases, or other liquids may be used. The fluid pressure films may alternatively be formed between the jacks 1 and the frame 11.
