Abstract
1433822 Removing H 2 S from molten sulphur SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 22 May 1973 [24 May 1972] 24291/73 Heading C1A H 2 S is removed from molten sulphur by introducing a finely divided oxidizing gas under pressure and a nitrogen-containing compound into the S confined en masse in a tank. The oxidizing gas may be air, O 2 and/or SO 2 together with N 2 or steam. NH 3 , an ammonium salt, alkyl amine, hydroxyalkyl amine, urea or a substituted derivative of these organic N- containing compounds may be added in an amount of from 20-1000 p.p.m. by wt. to the S. Liquid diethanolamine or di-isopropanolamine are preferred. Molten S derived from a Claus plant may be introduced into the small compartment 5 of heated vessel 2 via line 1. An oxidizing gas, heated in steam jacket 9, is introduced at an excess pressure of 0À5-1À0 atm. via manifold 10 into the bottom of the openended cylinder 6 under the surface of the molten sulphur. A N-containing additive is also introduced in the molten S via a steam heated line from doser 13. Excess sulphide-free S in the compartment 5 is discharged therefrom over weir 14 into a larger collecting compartment 5 from which the S is removed via pump 15 and line 16. Spent oxidizing gas is steam injected into a Claus plant via lines 17 and 19.
