1432807 Cationic complexes with amides W MOLLER [trading as WILLI MOLLER GLASBLASEREI] 18 April 1973 [24 April 1972 5 April 1973] 18720/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] Lipid soluble complexes are obtained by reacting metal or ammonium ions in solution with an uncharged complex forming substance of the formula wherein X is selected from -Y-, and wherein Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are independent from each other and are oxygen or sulphur atoms and wherein at least one is other than an ester, thioester, acid amide or thioamide group, and wherein the radicals R are hydrogen atoms or organic radicals or two radicals R together with the carbon atom to which they are bonded form a ring structure, R<SP>1</SP> is an organic radical, R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an organic radical or the radicals R 1 and R 2 , together with the nitrogen atom of a group -CO-NR 1 R 2 , form a heterocyclic radical comprising, optionally, further hetero atoms, or both radicals R 1 of the two terminal groups -CO-NR 1 R 2 form together a group which closes the compound of Formula I to form a cyclic structure, R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an organic radical, a is O or an integer of from 1 to 3, and the n's are independent from each other and are integers of from 1 to 5. The radical R 1 may be selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl and aryl groups, which groups are optionally substituted by carbonyl groups, ester groups, acid amide groups or ether groups and the bivalent group represented by two terminal groups R 1 together, when completing a cyclic structure, may be an alkylene radical which is optionally substituted or interrupted in its carbon chain by carbonyl groups, ester groups, acid amide groups or oxygen atoms; preferred metal ions are calcium and barium ions. The products may be used to improve the solubility of cations in organic solvents, or the process may be employed for the determination of cations, e.g. in a membrane, or in electrodialysis.
