Abstract

1432428 Decontaminating liquids H O E GAZDA 29 May 1973 25480/73 Heading A2D [Also in Division B2] An apparatus for decontaminating liquids of bacteria comprises a centrifuge having a rotary disc with an unbranched coaxial annular passage therein for radially outward flow of liquid from an inner peripheral inlet to an outer peripheral outlet, said passage, consisting of a plurality of concentric annular zones of alternately large and small area in radial section so as to cause liquid travelling through said passage at a high velocity in use to undergo repeated substantial changes in acceleration thereby destroying bacteria present in the liquid, and a collection vessel for collecting liquid issuing from the outlet. The rotary disc is preferably positioned within the collection vessel. A suitable rotary disc is shown in the accompanying drawing and comprises disc 1 formed from the plates 3 and 4. Each plate is provided with radially spaced grooves 8, 9 which represent chamber-like extensions 10 of a nozzle gap 5. Liquid to be treated flows into the rotating disc at filling pipe 2, and passes along nozzle gap 5 to be discharged in collection vessel 7. A voltage of about 70 volts may be applied across the passage in the disc to aid the separation of bacteria from the liquid to be treated.
