Abstract
1432008 Controlling nuclear reactors GROUPEMENT POUR LES ACTIVITES ATOMIQUES ET AVANCEES 20 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 29400/73 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor control mechanism, operable also for safety and normal control, comprises an absorber element releasably suspended from a chain and drive means operable to raise and lower the element within an upright sleeve. The mechanism is suitable for a fast reactor cooled by liquid sodium. In one embodiment (Fig. 1a) the absorber element 7 is suspended by a chain 20 from an armature 19 of an electromagnet 15 which is itself suspended by a chain 11 which passes over a motor-drivable sprocket 3, unused chain being stored in a receptacle 13. A shock-absorber 24 is disposed in the base of the core channel. Upon release of the armature 19, the element 7 falls into the core and the armature is retained by projections (21) (Fig. 1b, not shown) on the interior of sleeve 6 so as to facilitate recoupling with the electromagnetic core. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the driven chain 111 suspends a mechanical gripper 115 having fingers 116, 118 biased outwards by a spring (119) (Fig. 3, not shown) to locate within a cavity in the absorber element 107. The fingers 116, 118 have externally rounded profiles (126) and are pivoted at the upper ends (at 125). The interior of a guide sleeve 1061 has cams 104 such that by raising the gripper 115 until the cams 104 contact the profiles (126) the fingers 116, 118 are urged together to release the element 107.
