1431888 Electro-phoretic separation UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 21 Aug 1973 [6 Sept 1972] 8678/75 Divided out of 1431887 Heading C7B An electro-phoretic separation apparatus comprises an annular separation chamber 6 bonded by coaxial outer and inner walls e.g. of cylindrical rotor 5 and stator 1 which rotate relatively (at least the outer wall rotating e.g. by rotor drive-shaft 7) about a common axis to stabilize flow conditions, inlet means e.g. tube 29 and orifice 31 for introducing migrant material and a migrant-supporting fluid into the chamber, outlet means 9 for selectively removing the supporting fluid with or without separated migrant fractions from the chamber e.g. through end-piece 10, and means for generating a radial force field to separate migrant material into fractions, e.g. cathode and anode systems 11, 16 each comprising an electrolyte compartment 12, 19 with inlet and outlet tubes 17, 22 and 18, 23 and bounded by stainless steel cathode/anode 13, 20 and porous resin bonded matrix tube 14, 21 supporting cellulose membrane 15, 15a permeable to ions, as disclosed in Specification no 1186184. The migrant material is supplied as disclosed in Specification 1431887. The separated fraction is conducted from a plurality of collecting chamber inlets 33 (only one shown), Fig. 4 (not shown) along a plurality of non-linear paths via inter-connected channels 38, Fig. 5 (not shown) to converge at outlet 34 within each collecting chamber; the minimum path length from all points on the inlet 33 being the same; the collecting chambers may be constituted by a stacked plurality of plates 36 with central orifice 37, spaced by washers 32. The catholyte and anolyte fed into compartments 12, 19 may be respectively ammonium acetate and ammonium phosphate solution. The carrier buffer passed up through chamber 6 may be a solution of tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane citrate, and the migrant fluid dialysed against the buffer solution may be a bovine blood serum.
