Abstract

1431843 Coated products AMCHEM PRODUCTS INC 12 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 27843/73 Heading B2E An acid-etchable metal surface is coated by immersing the surface an acidic aqueous resin dispersion, in which a primer-coating resin is dispersed in aqueous phase containing an acid which etches the metal surface to generate metal ions, which destable the otherwise-stable dispersion adjacent the metal surface to deposit a substantially uniform organic/ inorganic coating incorporating the primer resin, maintaining the metal surface in the dispersionatsucha temperature and for such a time as to form the organic/inorganic coating having the desired weight and/or thickness, removing the less coated surface and, if desired aftertreating the resultant coating to consolidate it, applying at least one further siccative coating, and hardening the siccative coating to integrate the resultant composite coating upon the underlying metal surface. The metal surface may be zinciferrous or ferriferrous. The primer resin dispersion may have a pH of from 1.6 to 3.8 and contain from 04 to 5.0 grams/litre of simple fluoride (calculated as F<SP>-</SP>), from 0.3 to 3.0 grams/litre of hydrogen peroxide and from 5 to 500 grams/litre of the dispersed resin. The dispersing agent may be added to the coating composition continuously or intermittently to avoid metal ion concentration build-up and/or metal ion may be removed to prevent concentration thereof from building-up, the effective concentration of the stabilising metal ions being maintained at not more than 3 grams per litre when using the former technique and not more than 1.5 grams per litre when using the second technique alone. The resin dispersion may have a pH of 1.6 to 5.0 and may initially contain at least a significant amount of ferric iron. The coating may be rinsed with an after-rinse solution containing hexavalent chromium. The siccative coating may be formed from any natural or synthetic film-forming resinous material and may be applied in paint or powder form. Suitable materials are linseed oil, tung oil, oil-modified alkyd resins, epoxy resins, vinyl acetyls, polyesters, polyamides, phenolic resins, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, styrene-butadiene copolymers, cellulosic resins and polyacrylic resins. They may be applied by brushing, dipping, flow coating, roller coating, pressure cortain coating, spraying or by electrophoretic coating. The following materials may be applied in powder form; polyvinyl chloride, epoxy resin, polyamide, cellulosic resin, polyester resin, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylic resin, fluorocarbon (e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene and polyfluoroethylene-propylene) resin and chlorinated polyethers. Such coatings may be applied by a flow coating, flocking, fluidised bed or electrostatic spraying. The siccative coating may comprise at least one intermediate coat and a top coat. The method is of particular use in coating car bodies.
